A Closer Look – The California Art League

Reception & Award Presentation: Saturday, November 15, 6:00–8:00 pm.
Join me at bG Gallery for the official opening of the exhibition, the announcement of awards, and an evening of wine, cheese and artful conversation.

I am thrilled that my photograph “Line Haul” was curated into “A Closer Look” by Om Belcher. The exhibition will be at BG Gallery, 2525 Michigan Ave #A2, Santa Monica, CA 90404 from November 15 – December 2, 2025.

The California Art League in partnership with bG Gallery is proud to present “A Closer Look,” an exhibition that explores the potency of detail, abstraction, and emotional resonance. This show invites artists to zoom in—literally or metaphorically—on those fragments, lines, surfaces, and moments that carry emotional weight. Whether it’s the subtle crack in stone that signals unease, the tension in a nape, or the arc of a racetrack whispering fury, this exhibition asks: What happens when we strip away the noise and see the essence?

Artists working in any medium — painting, metal, ceramic, glass, installation, photography, mixed media, and beyond — Work that expresses inner motivations: joy, grief, anger, longing, contemplation. The focus is not on grand narratives or scene, but distilled, dynamic fragments of experience.

Artist Talk: Sunday, November 23, 2025, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Delve deeper into the works with a moderated talk by the exhibiting artists, exploring process, intention, and interpretations of “A Closer Look.”

Line Haul A graphic black & white photograph of a man riding across a blacktop parking lot.

In the stark monochrome of “Coffee and Scooter,” a lone woman navigates the urban landscape, her figure , a contrast against the monumental presence of Walt Disney Concert Hall. The iconic Los Angeles landmark, rendered in gleaming silver, rises like a futuristic sculpture, its undulating metallic surfaces reflecting the city’s vastness and her own smallness within it.

Her casual stride, a coffee cup clutched in hand, suggests a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the grandeur, a fleeting pause in the day’s rhythm. Anchoring the foreground, a stray scooter stands alone, an unexpected splash of urban detritus that adds a touch of candid realism to this otherwise awe-inspiring scene. The juxtaposition of the mundane and the magnificent, the personal and the public, invites the viewer to ponder the individual’s place within the sprawling, ever-evolving tapestry of the city.
