AAP Magazine #58 B&W

For AAP Magazine #58: B&W, photographers from around the globe were invited to explore the boundless creative possibilities of monochrome, and the response was nothing short of remarkable. I am truly thrilled to be featured among the twenty-five winning photographers, a diverse collective representing twelve countries across three continents. While each artist brings a distinct voice and vision to the page, together our works reveal the extraordinary breadth and vitality of contemporary black and white photography.

Black and white imagery possesses an inherent ability to transcend time. By stripping away the distraction of color, the medium invites us to look more closely—to discover hidden emotion in a gesture, rhythm in a landscape, tension in a shadow, or profound beauty in the smallest detail. It is a visual language built on the fundamental interplay of light, contrast, texture, and imagination—a tradition that continues to inspire photographers across generations. Within the magazine’s pages, one finds an evocative mix of intimate portraits, striking architectural compositions, and landscapes transformed into abstract studies. Each portfolio serves as a reminder that monochrome is not merely an absence of color, but a deliberate creative choice that distills a subject to its emotional and visual essence.

My winning entry, Urbanity II, captures this philosophy through the lens of the built environment. In the photograph, the late afternoon sun casts long, dramatic shadows across the cityscape, where two stark white columns rise with a monumental presence. Their smooth surfaces catch the light, glowing with an ethereal quality that is powerfully contrasted by the inky silhouette of a lone figure. His anonymous form, framed against the luminous expanse of the architecture, emphasizes the quiet, existential drama of the urban environment. By removing the palette of the modern world, Urbanity II focuses entirely on the tension between solid mass and the ephemeral presence of humanity, inviting the viewer to find stillness within the geometry of light and shadow.
